CBN Tools With Engineered Micro Geometry

Cutting pressures are elevated in the area around the edge preparation due to the negative cutting condition. The schematic on the left shows a tool with a 0.004Ó T-Land and the size of the associated zone of elevated cutting forces. In contrast, the picture on the right illustrates the effect of a small radial edge preparation. In both cases, the edge of the tool is protected from chipping, but the Conicity radial edge preparation produces lower cutting forces and less corresponding wear. In third party tests, tools with small radial edge preparations have shown three times less flank wear than tools with T-Lands.

Magnified pictures of both cutting edges further illustrate the different cutting conditions created by the two types of edge preparations.
